There has been a lot of talk this week about the leadership of Stephen Harper in the Conservative party. A lot of people are calling for his head, but I am still supporting Mr. Harper as leader. I think dumping him is about the dumbest thing we could do right at this moment.
The Liberals love to seize the moment that they know we are weakest for an election. Just as they have in the past, they'll take the opportunity to hit us when we're down. (I will admit, if the tables were turned, I'm sure the Conservatives would do the same thing - it's just politics.) Anyway, dumping our leader at this point puts us in a very weak spot. Fighting an election with an interim leader in place is a bad, bad idea. The general populace won't like the idea of not knowing who they're electing for prime minister.
The other thing on my mind about all this is that wouldn't dumping Stephen Harper just reinforce the negative assumptions? I mean, it wouldn't necessarily happen, but I have a strong feeling the media would just spin it into "Hey look, they dumped him, he must have been an evil, so-con, rage-aholic," and then proceed to say the exact same things about whoever else we choose as leader. Keeping him in place shows the trust and esteem we have for our leader.
Not to mention, the impatient whining about how we need to do whatever it takes to get into power as soon as possible? Just make us look childish and unready to govern, and even worse - makes us look like the government that is currently clinging to power by whatever means possible. Power by all means is not a principle I support for the Conservative party.
Everyone should remember that one bad poll (which has already been contradicted by another poll) is not the end of the world - those things are only accurate 19 times out of 20, remember? Well, how many polls have we had in the last two months?
At this point, we need to stay the course. I trust the Stephen Harper will get us through the next election just fine, and if he doesn't? Well, we'll talk then.
There's something about the spirit of people in Alberta that I love. Fiercely independent, hard-working, and honest; I still see many of the ideals that the pioneers brought with them in their descendants and those who join them in Alberta. I admire
