I've been pretty busy lately... my mom and grandma were in town over the weekend, and I've been busy at school writing the last major bit of code needed for my research. No time for blogging, though I've got so much to write about. I just finished my nice turkey dinner leftovers and I figured I'd take a little time for updates before hitting KDevelop again.
Matt and I played our first competitive frisbee Ultimate game last week. I got signed up to the physics grad student team and decided to drag him along. It turns out that the league rules say you need two girls playing at all times, and I was the only girl on our team last week. Eep. The other team said they were OK with it at the beginning, but they started getting their asses handed to them and then they weren't so happy. Especially when I'd sit off for a break and there were no girls playing. Still, our team basically comprises of about four pro-stars who run around like crazy catching and throwing, and the rest of us who basically just run around and try to look useful. So if three of our four stars are on the field, we'll still be doing pretty good. Of course, I'll probably be wrong about this and we'll get our asses handed to us tomorrow night. I guess we'll see then!
(And now, for the most jarring transition ever!)
Last week I got some good news that made me jump up and do the dance of joy in my living room (while, of course, my mom and grandma were here to look at me like I'm crazy). DJ Dumbass next door finally got the choice between giving his notice or being evicted. YES! YES! YES! I'll be able to hear myself think in my living room again soon and we won't have to go out on weekends to avoid the "thump thump thump" noise that bad neighbours make. I was starting to think that he would be there forever; he's our landlord's friend's kid, so I understand that it would be tough to say anything to him or get rid of him altogether, but I think our landlord gave him the option of giving his notice so he could save face a little bit. Whatever, he's gone soon (end of October), so I don't care anymore. This is such a relief as I was actually putting serious thought into moving, even though I expect we'll be moving again in seven months when we get the hell out of Victoria.
(Another bad transition! Whee!)
My mom, grandma and I went to Thrify's on Saturday to get some supplies for the big turkey dinner we made yesterday. It was totally bizarre. It was like super happy fun day at the grocery store. Apparently, it was customer appreciation day. Well, let me tell you, I sure as hell felt appreciated. There were cookies and coffee at the entrance with a piano player and a sax player, and then while we were walking through the store there were goodies all over. My mom and grandma got some soy energy bar stuff (no soy for me!), and then there were veggies and dip, and then (my personal favorite) they had mini-golf set up in the store where you could win those pretty little glass bottles of Coke, but even if you sucked you still got two-bite brownies. I tried the mini-golf, and my aim was pretty good, but my stroke only comes in one strength - WHACK. I didn't get any of my four balls in the hole. My grandma, however, kicked all kinds of ass at it and got every single one of her balls in. So she got a Coke and some two-bite brownies. And then we were given flowers. And then we had cake. And then we had popcorn. And then we got really good chocolates. It was fan-fucking-tastic. Hmm, now I feel like chocolate though. D'oh!
We did manage to pick up some actual food while eating our way through Thrifty's, and we made an awesome turkey dinner last night and I got to use my china for the first time! I had the table set very nicely, maybe I'll post some pictures later. Yeah, I took pictures. Anyways, nice dinner with all the fixins, apple pies (thanks grandma!), a nice game of Rummoli - it was like having a nice Sunday dinner at home and it made me homesick again, even though my favorite two women were right there with me. They're gone to Vancouver now; a schizophrenia conference for mom and visiting with friends for grandma. I wish I had had more time that I could get away from school to visit while they were here (yeah, I'm looking at you, Friday night lab!)
A small taste of home, gone already. At least we'll be eating turkey all week.
